Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564), known in English as Michelangelo, was one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance and in the history of Western art. A sculptor, painter, architect, and poet, he left an indelible mark with masterpieces such as the Pietà , David , and the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel. Throughout his more than seventy-year career, he worked primarily in Florence and Rome, under the patronage of the powerful Medici family and various popes. His artistic genius marked a turning point in the conception of art, combining technical perfection, expressive power, and profound spirituality.
