Description

Catalogue of the Amefricana exhibition, presented at Malba between March 21 and June 10, 2024.

An artist born on the outskirts of São Paulo, Rosana Paulino explores in her work the profound and enduring social scars of colonialism, racism, and slavery in Brazil, from the perspective of perhaps its greatest victim: the Black woman. This publication addresses her main concerns through the reproduction of a rich selection of her pieces—transposed and juxtaposed photographs, sutures, prints, installations, drawings, videos, and paintings—and a body of texts that seek to broaden and enrich the reception of her work.

With an introduction by Maria Amalia Garcia, chief curator of Malba, the book includes essays by its editors, Andrea Giunta and Igor Simões—curators of the exhibition—and a conversation between them and Paulino, as well as a specially commissioned contribution by Kanitra Fletcher, curator of African-American and Afro-diasporic art at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
With its careful design, the volume is completed with the republication of a text by the late Lélia Gonzalez, Brazilian thinker and author of the concept of Africanness, plus a fundamental glossary of terms associated with this concept prepared by curator Weslei Chagas, who specializes in black art and thought.

African identity , as a word, as a concept, transcends territorial, linguistic, and ideological limitations and reflects an intense cultural dynamic involving complex processes of adaptation, resistance, reinterpretation, and the creation of new forms: an Afrocentric cultural dynamic. Rosana Paulino’s work offers us a map of visual journeys and thoughts to poetically elaborate, through sensitive and moving images, an experience that encompasses history and the present. An experience that is part of Brazil, of the Americas, and also of Argentina.” —Andrea Giunta
