Description

Catalogue of the exhibition Pablo Suárez. Narciso Plebeyo , presented at Malba between November 23, 2018 and February 18, 2019.

From a unique aesthetic perspective that draws on both tradition and the popular imagination of Argentina, Pablo Suárez was a central figure in the contemporary local art scene. A key figure in various collectives from the early 1960s to the mid-2000s, the artist participated in the legendary Di Tella and Tucumán Arde generations, worked on the margins of the art world, and developed an active teaching career that made him a link to emerging generations. The exhibition Narciso Plebeyo (Plebeian Narcissus) was the result of ambitious research conducted by curators Jimena Ferreiro and Rafael Cippolini and the Malba team. It brought together around 100 works, including paintings, drawings, objects, and sculptures, and provided access to valuable archival material.

This monograph compiles that research and serves as an expanded record of the exhibition. It includes reproductions of all the exhibited works and other complementary pieces—many of which were specially photographed for the book—as well as a wide selection of previously unpublished photographs, texts, and personal documents. In addition to the two curatorial essays, this volume includes a text commissioned for the occasion from the writer Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, which focuses on the gaucho imagery in Suárez's work, and an interview with the historian Laura Batkis—his close friend—edited from hundreds of hours of recorded conversations between them. Also included is an illustrated biography with archival photographs and a bibliography, thus completing the first comprehensive reference publication on the artist.

"From the early recognition of Alberto Greco—perhaps his great mentor—to the so-called 'generation of the 90s', Suárez's presence is decisive. Someone said that a native of a place is someone who makes 'the place not the same without him'. This applies perfectly to Suárez: to his boldness, to his way of confronting, to his endless activity—a maniac for painting, drawing, sculpture—to the discomfort he provoked in many, to his unique laughter and sensitivity." —Jimena Ferreiro and Rafael Cippolini
