Description
Catalogue of the retrospective exhibition of the Argentine artist covering 30 years of her career, presented at Malba between November 26, 2010 and February 7, 2011.
Although Marta Minujín has been an iconic figure in Argentine art since the 1960s, her vast body of work remains relatively unknown to the general public. This publication was edited to bridge that gap by compiling the in-depth research conducted for the retrospective exhibition the museum produced in 2010. Focusing particularly on 30 key years of Minujín's work, guest curator Victoria Noorthoorn, along with a team of collaborators and researchers, and the artist herself, delved into various archives to assemble in this book an extraordinary collection of texts and images that make it an indispensable reference catalogue on Minujín's position and relevance within the contemporary Argentine art scene and her relationship to international conceptualism. Since in several cases the works included in the exhibition had been destroyed or were deliberately ephemeral, an immense amount of archival photographic and film material was consulted, re-edited, and expanded; narratives were recorded, and restorations, recreations, and reconstructions of works were undertaken. The catalog thus seeks to account for both original productions and their remakes.
In addition to the curatorial essay, which outlines and justifies the proposed lines of interpretation, the book includes a biography (Javier Villa), a bibliography (Cristina Blanco), a section on works (with historical images and others produced specifically for the exhibition, along with texts by Jimena Ferreiro Pella), and an international art chronology (Victoria Giraudo). A special section of reproduced documents provides access to a selection of historical texts, many of which are published here for the first time. Finally, all the texts in the book are presented in English.
“During this last year of work, I’ve learned that Marta is and isn’t everything we think she is. I mean, Marta is freedom, a whirlwind, excess, egocentrism, pure creativity and madness, and also, contrary to what we might imagine, Marta is also method, precision, rigor, resilience, generosity, and a critical spirit, as well as a self-manager of artistic projects the likes of which Argentina has never seen.” —Victoria Noorthoorn
