Description

Within the framework of the co-publishing program with other institutions initiated in 2004, Malba co-produced with the Tamayo Museum of Contemporary Art of Mexico City, the catalogue made for the exhibition presented there in 2005, David Lamelas. Foreigner, Foreigner, Étrangér, Ausländer , curated by Inés Katzenstein.

This is the first comprehensive catalogue of Lamelas's work in Spanish, including documents from much of the artist's career, from his formative years in Buenos Aires in the 1960s to the present. It also reproduces the exhibited works and incorporates several texts: Katzenstein's curatorial text, "A Situational Aesthetic ," and a Spanish translation of a work by the German critic Benjamin Buchloh on Lamelas, written specifically for his 1997 retrospective at the Witte de With Centre for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam.

As Katzenstein writes: "Having participated in the most intense years of conceptualism, both in Argentina and in Europe, David Lamelas's trajectory is, nevertheless, strange and unclassifiable: the work has always reflected the multiple changes and displacements of the artist, making it elusive and difficult to confine within the usual schemes."

The exhibition is part of a series of exhibitions, tributes and symposia that, since the late 1990s, in different cities around the world, have been studying and revaluing the figure and work of Lamelas in his context.
