Description

Catalogue of the C-31 exhibition. The opposite of magic , presented at Malba between March 28 and July 7, 2014.

For the 31st edition of its Contemporary Program, dedicated to the museum's most experimental exhibitions, Malba invited the artist Lux Lindner (Buenos Aires, 1963) to present a curatorial script for this space. Especially known for his drawings, his sharp sense of humor, and his unusual musical performances, Lindner decided to bring together a group of nine Argentine artists with diverse backgrounds to explore the relationship between art and science.

This publication brings together the works of Julián D'Angiolillo, Pablo La Padula, Nuna Mangiante, Rodolfo Marqués, Héctor Meana, Leticia Obeid, Aimé Pastorino, Eduardo Santiere, and Julián Terán—a collection of 20 pieces reproduced here alongside biographies of each artist. In the curatorial essay that introduces the works, Lindner laments the neglect of science (and scientists) in Argentina and explores the possibilities of art collaborating with it to open new avenues of knowledge.

“The opposite of magic proposes an approach to the works of artists who distance themselves from the easy solutions and promises of immediacy offered by magic, and instead propose, in the curator's judgment—who is not a scientist—a rhyme with the patience and deconstruction of problems inherent in the scientific method. Activists of patience and planning have been sought out, those who distrust luck (...). The approaches are as varied as each artist's background, although a predominance of drawing has been sought, under the assumption that the questions will appear more clearly liberated from the seductions, pomp, and protocols of other disciplines such as painting.” —Lux Lindner
