Description

Catalogue of the exhibition Carlos Gallardo. Theatrum mundi , presented at Malba between April 23 and June 7, 2010.

Painter, photographer, graphic designer, set designer, and costume designer, Carlos Gallardo (Buenos Aires, 1944–2008) produced a complex body of work over a twenty-eight-year career. Together with choreographer Mauricio Wainrot—his life partner—he created the costumes and sets for approximately forty contemporary ballet productions staged in the most important theaters in Argentina and around the world, work for which he is best known. Two years after his unexpected death, Malba organized an exhibition in his honor and published this accompanying catalogue.

This publication focuses on her last four series of photographs, taken between 2007 and 2008, exploring the themes of time and memory. These series are reproduced here and introduced by an essay from guest curator Mercedes Casanegra. An illustrated biographical chronology by Victoria Giraudo completes the publication.

“Photography became autonomous in Gallardo’s work, as seen in the four series in this exhibition. They reveal several modalities characteristic of his work. The artist lived many years outside his country, and this is one of the reasons why so many of his works can have that wandering character: ‘…the archivist that I am has become a garbage collector that gathers every vestige of memory from the streets of the world…’Mercedes Casanegra.”
