Description
Catalogue of the exhibition Annemarie Heinrich. Secret Intentions , presented at Malba between March 20 and July 6, 2015
A pioneer of artistic photography in Argentina and founder of the group La Carpeta de los Diez (The Folder of Ten) , Annemarie Heinrich (Darmstadt, Germany, 1912 – Buenos Aires, 2005) is especially known for her portraits of local celebrities, a facet of her work that overshadowed her more personal explorations for the general public. The exhibition organized by Malba focused on her treatment of the body, her nudes, and her documentation of her intimate and family life—images that reveal the gaze of a free and unprejudiced woman who, in many ways, aligns with the feminist movement of the 1960s.
This catalogue reproduces the more than 90 vintage photographs gathered for the exhibition, interpreted here in light of the curatorial text by Agustín Pérez Rubio (artistic director of Malba 2014–2018), which explores Heinrich's role as an exponent of protofeminism. In addition, in a specially commissioned critical essay, researcher Paola Cortes-Rocca delves into the experimental aspects of her portraits, and Victoria Giraudo reviews and contextualizes her career in an interview with her children, Alicia and Ricardo Sanguinetti. Finally, the book includes a special section of material from the artist's archive (workbooks, image catalogues, photographs, and notes).
