Description
Catalogue of the exhibition Carrie Bencardino. The Unearthing of the Devil , presented at Malba between July 12 and October 13, 2025.
In her first institutional exhibition, Carrie Bencardino (Buenos Aires, 1993) presents a series of previously unseen works in Room 1 of Malba. Seeking different forms of expression, from the beginning of her career her work has been distinguished by its narrative construction, developed from her interest in the visual discourses of underground and of the spaces of collective counterculture. The notion of fluidity is a constant element in their production: both in their non-binary identity and in the way they manipulate pictorial matter, escaping from defined details and with a light material charge enlivened by gestural strokes.
The Unearthing of the Devil , curated by Carlos Gutiérrez, stems from the recognition of a possible crisis of the imagination, fueled by political upheavals and the rise of a type of thinking that tends to dissolve the bonds between people. Comprised mostly of paintings, the exhibition seeks to transform the gallery into a space where different spaces intersect: it is almost a bar, almost a cinema, almost a club. Similarly, the paintings function in a similar way, depicting situations that could occur anywhere, real or imagined. For Bencardino, the need to create new tools for constructing other worlds is paramount.
