Description

The texts in this two-volume set trace the development of John Baldessari's understanding of art from the early 1960s to the present day.
This volume, which spans from 1957 to 1974, includes numerous unpublished texts, as well as texts that illustrate Baldessari's word compositions, which achieve both a literary and graphic impact.

In a reduced style that is more practical than aesthetic, Baldessari writes by turns as a narrator, moralist, teacher, and occasionally as a gadfly, using whatever form is necessary to achieve what the artist describes as the central task of artistic creation: to communicate in a way that people can understand.
When describing his writings, Baldessari is usually concise and profound: "I never say 'building' when 'to build' would suffice ." He never underestimates his audience or the amount of information that already exists in the world.
