Description

Choosing 100 contemporary Argentine women artists is both difficult and easy. There are so many, and so many talented ones, but the decision is hard to make. The primary criterion here was gender, which might be considered politically incorrect, and it certainly is. However, Gata Flora believes that what was truly wrong was the historical discrimination women have suffered. It will take many years and many more books like this one to occupy the space that has been denied us in every sphere.

Many of the artists you'll see in these pages were already featured during the ten years that Gata Flora magazine was published. We've followed their work, accompanying them in their creative process, with admiration and wonder. Some of them are Alessandra Sanguinetti, Nicola Costantino, Marcia Schvartz, Flavia Da Rin, Luna Paiva, Renata Schussheim, Delia Cancela, Cynthia Cohen, Marta Minujín, Irina Werning, Nora Lezano, Chola, Ananké Asseff, Gaby Messina, and Sara Facio.
Others are recent finds, pure discoveries, artists that refer to the imagery of Gata Flora, such as Verónica Gómez, Emilia Gutiérrez, Inés Tanoira, Silvia Rivas, Vivian Galban or Magalí Polverino.

You'll find some of the most established artists, such as Liliana Porter, Liliana Maresca, Graciela Sacco, and those who represented us at the Venice Biennale: Luciana Lamothe, Mariana Telleria, and Mónica Heller. But you'll also discover the work of lesser-known Argentine artists who work daily on amazing projects, such as María Eugenia Cerutti, Guadalupe Miles, Paz Crotto, Valeria Conte, Patricia Di Paola, Rosana Simonassi, and Eugenia Calvo.
They are photographers, painters, sculptors, performers, video artists, textile artists, embroiderers, and illustrators. And there are far more than a hundred of them; this is merely a compilation intended to open a door to the wonderful world of women who create art in Argentina. We could publish several more volumes, but we have to start somewhere.
