Description
Catalogue of the exhibition Pop Brazil. Avant-garde and new figuration, 1960s-70s , presented at Malba between November 7, 2025 and February 2, 2026.
Following its presentation at the Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Pop Brasil. Vanguardia y nueva figuración, 1960s-70s arrives at the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA) with the addition of works from the Malba and Costantini collections. In its Spanish-English version, this publication includes a vast collection of images, five previously unpublished essays, and a selection of historical texts that illustrate the richness, power, and diversity of Brazilian art strategies from the second half of the 20th century.
Organized by the Pinacoteca de São Paulo on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of two fundamental exhibitions of Brazilian art —Opinião 65 and Propostas 65— , Pop Brasil. Vanguardia e Nueva Figuración, 1960s-70s is the most important and extensive exhibition presented in our country on the innovative and radical art of Brazilian artists of those two decades.
As seminal exhibition experiences for the development of the so-called new Brazilian figuration, Opinião 65 and Propostas 65 served as triggers for collective strategies capable of addressing the political and social context of Brazil, having as a correlate the expansion of mass culture, the resistance to the military dictatorship (1964-1985) and the emergence of cultural movements such as Tropicália and Cinema Novo .
Pop Brasil emphasizes the radical way in which Brazilian artists engaged with the daily life of their country, creating works that reconfigured the experience of the body in relation to forms of protest, popular culture, gender politics, public space, the domestic sphere, and consumption. In this sense, the exhibition also explores the relationship that the visual arts forged with other artistic fields, such as music and film, during the 1960s and 70s. Pop Brasil will allow the public to experience the radical nature of these proposals and understand the historical relationship between them.
