Description

Catalogue of the exhibition Joaquim Pedro de Andrade. Life in motion , presented at Malba between April 13 and June 11, 2007.

Although the work of Brazilian Joaquim Pedro de Andrade (Rio de Janeiro, 1932—1988) is key in Latin American cinema, in Argentina only his feature film had been widely distributed Macunaíma , a landmark of Cinema Novo. This publication is part of the restoration and dissemination project of his filmography (six feature films and eight short films), promoted by his daughters Maria and Alice and a pioneering effort on the continent, which allowed the Argentine public to discover this essential filmmaker.

The book includes essays by Brazilian filmmakers Walter Lima Jr., João Moreira Salles and Alice de Andrade—daughter of Joaquim Pedro—and an interview with the artist conducted by Sylvia Bahiense and presented in 1976 on TV Cultura, in the program Luzes, Câmara .
In addition, stills from all the films shown are reproduced, accompanied by complete technical data sheets.

"Integrity, originality, creativity, innovation, rigor: the range of adjectives used to describe Joaquim Pedro's role in Brazilian cinema is immense. His feature film career is far too short. As short as it is precise, as precise as it is generous, as generous as it is creative, and always faithful to his vision. Throughout the entire Cinema Novo movement, there is no other director as generous and faithful to the foundations of the movement that transformed the face of Brazilian cinema. His films are eminently national-popular, without losing a refined understanding of the soul of his people."Walter Lima Jr.
