Description
Catalogue of the exhibition Víctor Grippo. Homage , presented at Malba between July 27 and October 22, 2012.
To mark the tenth anniversary of the death of Víctor Grippo (Buenos Aires, 1936–2002), Malba organized a tribute exhibition in collaboration with his widow, Nidia Olmos. In 2004, the museum had already held a major retrospective of the artist—the most comprehensive to date—and on this occasion, it presented a curated selection of pieces to highlight the social dimension of his work, now recognized worldwide as one of the most original and significant in the history of 20th-century contemporary art.
This publication reproduces the 20 anthological works exhibited—objects, installations, works in progress, boxes and specially reconstructed environments—among which are the historical ones Everything in motion (Index of the general movement of beings and things) (1973), Some trades (1976) or The potato browns the potato, consciousness illuminates consciousness (1978), and his famous series Enclosing the light and Anonymous , and the pieces Life, Death, Resurrection (1980) and The artist's food (1991), from the Malba Collection. In the critical essays, Marcelo E. Pacheco reviews the artist's social ideals in relation to Argentina's violent history, and researcher and curator Adriana Lauria addresses the alchemical nature of his works. The book also includes a brief selection of texts by Grippo himself and an illustrated biography.
"Grippo had faith in redemption, he believed in a new order where the inhabitants of the ends of the earth, surrounded by the greatest violence, could feel wonder at the generosity of the earth." —Marcelo E. Pacheco.
“Grippo has transmuted his ideas and convictions into artistic objects, which, by addressing our sensibilities, renew our faith that all transformation is possible. The alchemist has set his work in motion.” —Adriana Lauria.
