Description

Catalogue of the exhibition Rafael Barradas. Arrow Man presented at Malba between September 21, 2021 and February 14, 2022 and organized in collaboration with the National Museum of Visual Arts of Uruguay (MNAV)

As part of the twentieth anniversary celebrations, Malba presented the exhibition Rafael Barradas. Arrow Man , dedicated to the Uruguayan artist, a pioneer of the Latin American and European avant-garde and founder of Vibrationism. The catalogue was co-edited by the exhibition's curator and director of the National Museum of Visual Arts of Uruguay, Enrique Aguerre, and the chief curator of Malba, María Amalia García.

The book reproduces the works on display along with a significant selection of texts. In addition to the curatorial essay, the publication includes contributions from guest researchers who address various aspects of Barradas's work: the influence of the modern city, the foundations of Vibrationism, and his artistic exchange with his sister, the composer Carmen Barradas. The volume is rounded out by a biography of the artist and a selection of documents that attest to the diverse influences between Barradas and his close artistic circle, particularly his connection with Joaquín Torres-García.

“Rafael Barradas. Arrow Man focuses on the avant-garde artist, the innovator, the dizzying creator who is not afraid to transform himself with each new vision that seizes him. Even in the most difficult conditions of survival, Barradas did not abandon his will to hit the mark. This collection of works only confirms that, once dedicated to his ‘great art,’ his impetus always proved successful.” —Enrique Aguerre
