Description

Catalogue of the exhibition Miguel Ángel Ríos 2001 — 2008 , presented at Malba between August 21 and October 5, 2009.

On the occasion of the 24th edition of its Contemporary Program, Malba presented an exhibition of the Argentine artist Miguel Ríos (Catamarca, 1943), specially dedicated to his video installations produced between 2001 and 2008.
This publication records the selection of exhibited pieces, with film stills of the three video installations— Neither Color, Nor Height (2001); On the Edge (2005) and White Suit (2008)—and from the documentary Friendly Fire (2006), which was exhibited in the museum auditorium, plus reproductions of a group of works on paper from the series White Suit, Crudo, Matambre . Inspired by the popular traditions of Latin American peoples, such as soccer, the game of wooden tops in Mexico, and the Argentine malambo, these works, from Ríos's perspective, raise questions about violence, racism, and marginalization inscribed in cultural identities. Brief essays by theorists María Belén Sáez de Ibarra (Colombia), Paulo Herkenhoff (Brazil), and Guillermo Gasió (Argentina) illuminate the meaning of the three main pieces.

“Ríos’s work with video installations is based on the study of the metaphors evoked by certain games or cultural performativities deeply rooted in communities, in the people (…) This designates his interest in the ways in which these cultural-political processes of power operate, generating our ways of living in society. But always as allegories of other, less harmless, and not so playful mechanisms.”María Belén Sáez de Ibarra.
