Description

Catalogue of the exhibition Ana Teresa Barboza. Weaving the stones , presented at Malba between April 8 and August 8, 2022.

Ana Teresa Barboza (Lima, 1981) expresses herself through embroidery, tapestry, and basketry techniques in various formats, from large installations to small tapestries and manipulated photographs. She works with cotton threads, wool, stones, and reeds; her colors, materials, and forms evoke ancient Peruvian textiles, which, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, narrate the close relationship between local communities and their natural environment. This exhibition brings together fourteen works from Barboza's recent production, condensing several recurring elements in her work.

Alongside the exhibition, Malba presents the first publication dedicated to Barboza's work, her career, and her conceptual affinities. The book reproduces the exhibited works, along with a selection of photographs from previous series and graphic materials. It includes a curatorial essay by Verónica Rossi and an interview with the artist by Peruvian researcher and curator Florencia Portocarrero, exploring the relationship between her work and the context of the contemporary Peruvian art scene. The publication is completed with a glossary of fundamental textile art terms, conceived and illustrated by the artist Guillermina Baiguera.
