Description
Salvation features 215 photographs by American artist Andrés Serrano, one of the most celebrated figures in contemporary photography and art. He achieved great prominence with his work Piss Christ , which has not lost its unsettling impact. Religion, sexuality, and death are omnipresent elements in his work.
Raised Catholic in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Serrano felt a keen interest in the Hasidic community from a young age. An invitation to Israel broadened his artistic repertoire: with a Mamiya RB67 camera, he explored the theme of religious faith through landscape and people. He visited holy sites in Bethlehem, Ramallah, Galilee, and the Dead Sea; he approached people step by step, image by image, following them through their daily lives and celebrations, and ultimately captured the essence of an entire nation's identity through their faces in the intense studio photographs collected in this volume.
