Make yourself a friend

Description

Inner Song is a photographic work that combines stories to build a bridge between the past and present of Patagonia.

In the 19th century, the first Welsh settlers arrived on the shores of Chubut, fleeing the oppression of the British Crown, in search of a place to live and express themselves freely. The Argentine government invited them to settle that almost unexplored south with the promise of land, tools, and freedom of speech. However, they arrived in a desert, and history took a different turn. What happened between those years and today is the subject of this book.
Brátin weaves an intimate and reflective narrative about belonging, memory, and migration. “My desire was to become a vessel for all the stories. To hold within these pages some of everything that was passed down orally in their families. To immerse myself to see and feel, to listen and tell,” she says in the opening pages, revealing a careful process of immersion she developed by exploring with her lens, witnessing every ritual, remembrance, celebration, choir, rehearsal, or gathering of this community.

Inner Song is a personal and subjective reflection by the author. "We can see parts of our lives in other lives, in another time, in another place," she reflects, adding: "The initial plan for this book was entirely photographic, but something happened, and I allowed it to be: the need to narrate in words what I was perceiving." Stories born from profound conversations, a tribute to those who crossed the ocean seeking freedom and to their descendants, who keep their stories alive today.
