Description

Catalogue of the exhibition Tracey Emin. How It Feels , presented at Malba between November 16, 2012 and March 10, 2013.

Celebrated and controversial, Tracey Emin (London, 1963) is an undisputed figure in the contemporary art scene. She produced her first videos in the 1990s, after emerging on the scene alongside the group of young artists later known as the Young British Artists, and has distinguished herself through the confessional, uninhibited, and emotive nature of her work.

This publication was edited to accompany How It Feels , her first solo exhibition in a Latin American museum. The show brought together five of her most important films, produced between 1995 and 2000 and focused on some of her recurring themes: early sexual awakening, abuse, abortion, gender politics, and class structures.
The book reviews the five films shown through a selection of film stills , accompanied by a transcript of the text for each one. It also includes a curatorial essay by Philip Larratt-Smith, a specially commissioned text by the Argentinian artist Fernanda Laguna, and an interview by the curator with Emin illustrated with biographical images.

“…Tracey Emin’s humor. A volatile medium through which the tragic can dissolve and thus circulate with a lightness of its own. To pierce the rigid walls of solemnity and make her work a whisper or a transparent diamond with a thousand facets, thereby opening multiple points of access. This humor makes her inner world generous (…) Tracey Emin has many children she doesn’t even know (and perhaps doesn’t even want), but to whom, without knowing their names, she gives what she has to give, which is life.” —Fernanda Laguna
