Catalogue of the exhibition Robert Mapplethorpe. Eros and Order, presented at Malba between June 4 and August 2, 2010.

"Robert Mapplethorpe is considered by the world's most respected art critics and historians to be one of the most influential photographers of the second half of the twentieth century. More than two decades have passed since his death in March 1989, and his work remains relevant and continues to inspire passion. Mapplethorpe was an artist who dared to radically challenge the boundaries of art from a completely classical and formal approach in terms of technical rigor in the use of the camera, the use of light, and composition. He obsessively examined the theme of beauty in works featuring evocative flowers, still lifes of objects and Greco-Roman sculptures, portraits of rock, art, and high-society figures, fashion shoots, and a detailed study of the human body."

In this exhibition, Robert Mapplethorpe: Eros and Order, curator Anne Tucker presents a selection of 132 photographs from the various series the artist created throughout his life. This retrospective was organized in collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation in New York, from which all the works originate. I am grateful for the support provided by this Foundation to Malba through Michael Ward Stout, its president, and his team, who worked on every detail of the exhibition. I also thank the U.S. Embassy in Argentina for their collaboration and especially Anne Wilkes Tucker, the prestigious photography curator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, for her excellent essay and her commitment to this project.” — Eduardo F. Costantini
